Cultural Attractions:
MUSEO INTERNACIONAL DE ARTE CONTEMPORANEO (MIAC)
Castillo de San Jose, Puerto Naos, Arrecife
This stylish museum has a permanent collection of modern art donated by many prestigious artists, including Picasso, Miro and Riviera. The castle's gallery space in the basement features temporary art exhibitions. The current show is an installation "NKTV/LNZ - Neokinok Television, Lanzarote"
- a reflection about media communications by artist, Rogelio Lopez (until 15 May). The artist has collaborated with various local artists including Ruben Acosta and Pepe Vera. Entrance is free (open throughout the day from 11am - 9pm).
FUNDACION CESAR MANRIQUE
Taro de Tahiche
Previously Cesar Manrique's home, this architectural masterpiece is Lanzarote's top cultural destination. It illustrates Manrique's approach to house-building in Lanzarote, and is a magical backdrop to his wonderful art collection. If you don't visit this place, you haven't visited Lanzarote. It reminds people what is so special about
this island (compared to most overdeveloped tourist destinations).
CASA TEGOYO
Carretera Conil-Asomada 7, Conil
The Casa Tegoyo is a beautiful country house hotel approximately 15 minutes inland from Puerto del Carmen. During the weekend of 29th/30th May it is celebrating its 200th anniversary with a weekend of fine food, live music (jazz and flamenco) and local art. Booking a table for the Saturday dinner or Sunday brunch is recommended.
LOS ALJIBES DE TAHICHE
Calle Bravo Murillo, 6, Tahiche
On the road from Costa Teguise (towards Tahiche), on the left-hand side, you will spot some intriguing sculptures which belong to the (somewhat hidden) El Aljibes gallery - which is inside two converted well buildings down a slope of grass covered steps. The gallery
organises some excellent exhibitions - although the place itself is well worth a visit. Because it is so unusual, it is regularly hired out for private events.
CASA SANTIAGO
Villa de Teguise
This town is worth a recce on Sunday, to catch the buzzy street
market and to see Teguise's interesting shops, galleries and historic builidngs. This building, near the centre of Teguise, houses a couple of clothes shops and a cafe which shows art exhibitions by local artists.
SALA EL ALHIBE
Haria
This town is in the north of Lanzarote and is worth a visit - preferably on Saturday morning, when the market is held (10am - 2pm) - smaller than Teguise's market, but better quality items. This gallery's name means 'a well", hence why it's underground and often missed! It's close to the market (if you miss the sign, ask in the nearby corner bar, the hub of the town). Down a winding staircase, you come into a handsome space used for contemporary art exhibitions. Haria also has some fine architecture and is greener than the south because of its cooler climate, so a trip here can provide a welcome respite from the heat.
